Search Engine Marketing

Search Engine Marketing

When you get your website online, chances are you're going to be pretty keen to get as much targeted traffic as you can. There are a number of ways to get traffic to your website. No one method alone is really enough to do the job. It takes a number of different components working together to do this effectively. Search Engine Marketing Search Engine Marketing (SEM) can be broken into two components: Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Search Engine Advertising (SEA). SEO refers to unpaid (free) search engine results while SEA refers to paid advertising. In both SEO and SEA it is important to have a good handle on what words and phrases your target market are using to look for your services.

Site content

If your website isn't receiving the amount of traffic you would like or getting the Search Engine results you need. There are a number of approaches to take. The simplest is to review your web copy. We sometimes find that the key words and phrases a company should optimise for are not actually mentioned anywhere on their website. It’s impossible for a search engine to match a word or phrase with your website if they don’t exist in the copy! Therefore, the first thing that should be done when it comes to website content is to make sure that the appropriate keywords and phrases are included in the copy. Search engines allocate extra weighting to titles and headings, so use the appropriate heading hierarchy when writing copy. Links are also an important factor, and search engines follow links to discover new content. Links should be as descriptive and relevant as possible. Avoid useless terms like ‘click here’ as this tells neither the search engine or site visitor what the link is for. If the link is going to the sites contact page, then using the words ‘contact us’ makes more sense than ‘click here’. Taking basic elements like this into consideration when writing copy will make a website not only a lot more search engine friendly, but will also help your site visitors. This advice applies to both paid and un-paid search engine marketing. Contact us to find out more about search engine marketing.
