Mobile Internet

Mobile devices are the fastest growing medium being used to access the Internet. Internet Trends - a report by Morgan Stanley estimates that by the end of 2013 the number of mobile internet users will outnumber desktop and laptop users. In 2010 alone, mobile web traffic grew by 600% and in the same year mobile devices outsold computers. Apple iPhone If a visitor arrives at your website with an iPhone, Android or Blackberry and they can’t navigate the site properly, the content will have to be pretty compelling for them to persist. It is more likely that after 30 seconds or so of 'pinch and zoom' they will give up and find a competitor that has catered for mobile devices. To avoid this situation, a mobile strategy should be included at the very beginning of any web project. Mobile Interface Design Considerations

8bits take the steps needed to cater for mobile devices at the beginning of the design phase. We then include access for mobile users when the site is being built. Mobile users have limited screen space, so elements of the design that are present in the desktop version need to be stripped out. Particular attention needs to be given to imagery. Mobile users often have to pay much more for downloaded data. Giving them lots of large pictures to download won't endear them to your website. Wireless connections are generally a lot slower than the fixed line broadband connection used by most computers, so this is another reason to keep imagery light and to a minimum. Site navigation needs to be reworked. User testing shows that a large, easy to read menu works best. Additional tabs can be presented using a dropdown feature, but it is best to keep options to a minimum. An easy to access search function is also very useful, as this can save the user time when they are looking for something specific. These are some of the basic elements that need attention when designing a mobile interface. Contact us to find out more about mobile web design. CONTACT US
